Loughborough Lightning, the premier netball team in the Midlands, has been selected to continue their participation in the Netball Super League.

The decision by England Netball will see the sport’s premier competition continue to be played at Loughborough University for the next four seasons.

Loughborough Lightning is a franchise owned by Loughborough University, in partnership with East Midlands Netball. The team are based at the University and is made up of current students, Loughborough graduates and regional players.

A number of England internationals have played for Lightning in recent seasons including current coach Olivia Murphy, Karen Atkinson, Jade Clarke and Jo Harten.

Jo Emmett, Loughborough Lightning Franchise Manager commented:

“We are delighted with the news that we have been offered a Netball Super League Franchise for the next four years. This will enable us to build on our successes over the past six years.

“The announcement means we can enhance our strong partnership with England Netball, and build on our aspiration to be the best netball development environment in England.

“In the run up to the new season we will be working hard to ensure that we offer an outstanding match day experience for our loyal Lightning fans, and also to encourage new supporters to come and watch top class netball.”

England Netball decided after the end of the 2011 season to cut the number of Super League teams from nine to eight. The eight franchises selected are:

• Celtic Dragons • Hertfordshire Mavericks • Loughborough Lightning • Northern Thunder • Surrey Storm • TeamBath • Team Northumbria • Yorkshire Jets

Cheryl Danson, England Netball Chairman, said

“England Netball is delighted to announce the eight franchises that we believe will support the England Netball performance objective of becoming number one in the world.

“It is regrettable that Glasgow Wildcats lose their place in the competition, and that the Birmingham based application missed out on the final eight; however, we wish all successful franchises the best of luck for the 2012 season and beyond.”

The new season gets underway on the weekend of 21 January 2012 and will conclude with the Grand Final Weekend on 19 and 20 May.
