Santander support accelerates with Formula Scholarships

Santander - F1

Loughborough’s strong relationship with Banco Santander has moved up a gear, following the banking group’s decision to award the University further funding through its scholarship programme.

Through its Santander Universities Global Division, the company has announced it will be offering 10,000 university grants and scholarships in the UK over the next four years.

The grants are part of the Formula Student programme which is giving 300 scholarships worth €5,000 each to recipients in Brazil, Spain and the United Kingdom.

Formula 1 drivers’ Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button handed out scholarships at a ceremony in Central London, which was well attended by students from Loughborough University

Will Warden, a recipient of a Santander scholarship who was at the event, said:

“The support that Santander has provided me as a student has been superb.  Not only has it allowed me to focus on my studies without having money worries, it has also meant that I have been able to combine my sporting aspirations.  This year I captained the Loughborough Students Rugby team, which made it to the league two play-off final.

“Not only was the ceremony a great opportunity to meet Lewis and Jenson, but importantly it also gave me the chance to personally thank Santander representatives, and tell them how their funding has paid dividends in my academic studies and sporting achievements.”

Vicki Unwin, Head of Sport Fundraising at Loughborough University, said:

“We have worked closely with Santander Universities over the last four years.  Examples of this include support for our Hockey and Futsal Programmes, prizes in the School of Business and Economics and global travel scholarships to strengthen links with Universities in South America and China.

“The fact that Santander has decided to extend its support to the University through this year’s Formula Scholarships scheme is much appreciated, and further builds on our strong relationship.”

Emilio Botín, Chairman of Banco Santander, said:

“Santander’s UK alliance with universities is very successful. For us it is an honour to have such a privileged relationship with the UK universities. That’s why in the next four years our target is to distribute 10,000 awards and scholarships. I am very proud to announce an extra 100 scholarships for the UK”
