University staff and students get competitive for Corporate Games

Tim Burton - Corporate Games

Loughborough University’s staff and students will take on businesses from across the country at the UK Corporate Games – Europe’s largest corporate multi-sports festival - hosted on campus this week (15-17 July).

The 55-strong University team are flying the Loughborough flag in badminton, basketball, karting, rugby, running, squash, swimming and volleyball as more than 4,000 competitors will come onto campus for the three-day event.

Sports will take place at University facilities with a number of events being hosted off campus at venues including Watermead Country Park (dragon boat racing and swimming), Loughborough Endowed Schools (cricket 8s, netball, running, softball and touch rugby), Formula 1 Karting, and Scraptoft and Forest Hill golf clubs.

Purchasing and payments manager Tim Burton is part of a group of staff representing the University in badminton. For Tim - who took up badminton just five years ago and has since become a regular at the University’s thrice-weekly staff and student sessions - the UK Corporate Games will be his first major competitive event.

“I didn’t take up badminton until later in life, but it has been truly life changing for me,” he said. “I now play up to five times a week, including three times at work, with colleagues and students.

“The Corporate Games will be my first ever competition. I’m really excited to be taking part and am looking forward to it. It’s great to be able to represent the University against other teams in the same facilities I play in every week.”

Tim will be competing in the singles competition and will partner Finance colleague Maria Perry in the mixed doubles.

Competitors will arrive in Loughborough on Friday with the majority of fixtures taking place on Saturday and Sunday.

Loughborough’s bid to host the UK Corporate Games was successfully made through a partnership between the University, Charnwood Borough Council and Leicestershire County Council.
