Future cricket stars to compete in Twenty20 tournament

Loughborough University is to host a major Twenty20 cricket tournament for some of the best young players in the country.

The MCC Universities event on 24 – 25 June will see the Loughborough Students team take on Oxford in the first round.

The other University teams are taking part are Cambridge, Leeds/Bradford, Durham and Cardiff.

The tournament is being run by MCC Universities (MCCU), the scheme that aims to ensure that the best young cricketers are encouraged to go into Higher Education by providing them with opportunities to develop their cricket while studying at University.

Three current Loughborough University students, Sam Billings (Kent), Maurice Holmes (Warwickshire) and Ravi Patel (Middlesex) have all been offered contracts for the forthcoming season.

Numerous cricketers have been given professional contracts following on from their time at Loughborough, including England international Monty Panesar.

Loughborough University’s cricket head coach Graham Dilley said:

“The Twenty20 tournament is a fantastic idea from the MCC that gives all the MCCU students the opportunity to play an increasingly important form of the game. Loughborough University are proud to host this event which continues to raise the profile of Loughborough student cricket.”

The tournament also forms part of this year’s IAMLUFBRA campaign.

Individual tickets are also available online at £4.00 for concessions, £7.00 for adults.

The matches will be played on the Hazlegrave and Brockington cricket pitches on the University campus. To see Loughborough Students in action against Oxford at Brockington the gates open midday with match starting at 1.15pm.
