Students excel at Textile Society Design Competition
Textile students from Loughborough University have excelled at a prestigious industry awards by picking up three category wins and 20 commendations.
Twenty Loughborough School of the Arts students received commendations at the Bradford Textile Society Design Competition, and were selected from a record number of almost 900 entries from students nationwide. The competition celebrates achievements in weave, print and multi-media textiles.
Final year Woven Textile student Amy Long was the standout success with two category wins and a scholarship prize from the Worshipful Company of Weavers.
Amy won first prize in the Clothworkers’ Foundation Award for a woven fabric for mens or womenswear as well as the top spot in the Woolmark Company Award, presented for a woven or knitted fabric that best demonstrates the beauty and unique benefits of luxurious natural fibres.
Printed Textiles student Charlotte Barber was winner in the Association of Fashion and Textile Courses category, awarded for a fashion fabric designed for a specific outfit or garment collection.
Jan Shenton Programme Co-ordinator in Woven Textiles is delighted with her charges’ successes.
“We place great importance on external contact for students on the course and all are encouraged to enter national competitions like this where entries are judged alongside professional designers and post graduate students,” she said.
“Once again our students have triumphed, and for Amy to win two first prizes is an amazing achievement.
“To win or be commended at this event is a fantastic accolade and is well deserved recognition of the high standard of creativity and innovation of the work produced by our students.”
The incredible success of Loughborough’s students led to the School of the Arts receiving the Textiles Designers Guild Silver Award for outstanding work in this year’s competition.
