Students push for promotion in Jersey rugby play off final

rugby

Loughborough Students Rugby Football Club are heading to the Channel Islands this week with high hopes of securing promotion.

The Students will be playing against Jersey in the National League 2 play off final on Saturday 28th May. The winners will be promoted to National League 1, the third tier of the RFU’s league pyramid.

Loughborough qualified for the play off final by beating Westoe last weekend with a hard fought 31-12 win.  The victory also ensured that the team completed a perfect home season with 15 out of 15 wins.

Captain Will Warden, who is studying a Masters degree in Business Management said:

“There is a great buzz going around and everyone is excited for this weekend. For the neutrals, this weekend’s game against Jersey will be a great spectacle. With talk of their being a 5000 strong crowd, the atmosphere will be electric, which will be matched by two sides that are hungry to play, and hungry for promotion.

“For Loughborough, this week no stones are being left unturned in our preparations so that when we hit the field on Saturday we can do things the way we always do, the Loughborough way.”

The team will make the long journey to Jersey looking to atone for last season’s defeat against Rosslyn Park, which denied them promotion at the same stage.

Loughborough Students’ Coach Dave Morris said:

“It would mean an enormous amount to the club to gain promotion. We are already the highest ranked student side in the national leagues, which is a fantastic achievement.  But we really want to get to level 3 in the rugby pyramid.

“As an amateur club that prides itself on player development, promotion is important for our current squad, who by winning on Saturday can leave their legacy through providing a higher level of rugby for our future players.”

For those not making the trip to the Jersey this week the game will be streamed live by Channel Television and full live commentary will be available on BBC Jersey.
