Engineering a top photograph – University calls for competition entries

Loughborough University is seeking schoolchildren to enter a special photography competition launched earlier this year as part of National Science and Engineering Week (NSEW).

Would-be photographers aged seven and above are invited to submit creative and interesting photographs capturing the impact of engineering and communications on the modern world.

Entries are judged in three age group categories (7-11 year olds, 12-14 year olds and 15-18 year olds) and category winners will receive a “Flip” HD camcorder. An overall winner will be presented with a trophy, and runners-up in each category will receive a Fujifilm Instax Mini 7 camera.

Communications can mean a lot of different things. Mobile phones, the internet, radios and road signage are amongst the many technologies requiring engineers’ help to deliver messages. Examples of engineering and communications are everywhere around us.
Lesley Davis of the University’s Faculty of Engineering, which is running the competition said:
“We hope to inspire pupils to take a different look at the world around them and consider how    engineering impacts on their everyday lives. The way we communicate has changed drastically over the last two decades and engineers have played a key role in developing these new technologies.

“We are excited to see how young people represent engineering and communications through still images and we wish all entrants the best of luck.”

Entries should be emailed to nsewphotos@lboro.ac.uk by midnight on Friday 3rd June, 2011.

Entrants must provide their name, age, address and a contact telephone number, along with a brief description of what is happening in the photo and where it was taken. Entrants can submit up to four photos, in colour and/or black and white.
