Loughborough University business students Matt Scotland and Michael Colyer fought off strong competition from other universities to be named ‘Undergraduate of the Year’ in the categories of ‘Business and Finance’ and ‘Management’ at the 2011 national TARGETjobs awards held recently at Canary Wharf.

Sponsored by leading employers, the TARGETjobs awards attracted nearly 4000 entrants across twelve subject areas.  The Business and Finance Undergraduate of the Year, sponsored by Morgan Stanley was won by Accounting and Financial Management student Matt Scotland and the Management Undergraduate of the Year, sponsored by Enterprise Rent-A-Car was won by Management Sciences student Michael Colyer, both of whom study at Loughborough University’s School of Business and Economics.

Upon receiving their awards from The Right Honourable Michael Portillo, both won summer internships lasting over two months with their respective award sponsor, including an all expenses paid week internship at their US headquarters. With both students set to begin their Placement Year as part of their studies, they were excited at the additional opportunities the award offered them.

"I feel honoured and privileged to have won this award and look forward to spending the summer with Morgan Stanley in both London and New York", said Matt Scotland, with Michael Colyer adding: “It was a great surprise to have won.  It has been a tough but enjoyable process.  Having already done internships at Accenture and Ernst & Young, I am really looking forward to starting my internship with Enterprise Rent-A-Car.”

Loughborough University enjoyed considerable success over the twelve categories of the awards, with seven finalists and two winners.  As well as winning more awards than any other university this year, Loughborough also saw Adam Norris shortlisted for the Structures and Systems award sponsored by Airbus and both Peter Bailey and Tom Holmes shortlisted for the Management award sponsored by Enterprise Rent-a-Car.

Professor Angus Laing, Dean of Loughborough’s School of Business and Economics commented: “This is a fantastic achievement and demonstrates the quality of Management and Finance students we have here at Loughborough.  Both students have won superb internship opportunities and it is a great credit to the University that our students are recognised for not only being academically gifted but also having the sort of personal skills that recruiters want.”
