Sven addresses Loughborough science in football seminar

Sven Goran Eriksson

One of the biggest names in football management has visited Loughborough University to attend a breakthrough seminar on science expertise in the sport.

Sven Göran Eriksson, the former England and current Leicester City Football Club manager, spoke at the ‘Science in Football: from Principle to Practice’ seminar (Wednesday 30th March) about the developments he has witnessed during his time in management.

Mr Eriksson’s attendance at the event was thanks to the relationship developing between the University and Leicester City Football Club, who have been working together on transferring scientific knowledge from the laboratory to the training ground.

The seminar was attended by over 100 delegates from some of the biggest clubs in English football, including Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, alongside international representatives from Spain and Ghana.

It was a unique opportunity for the football industry to engage with sports scientists that have influenced international and domestic governing bodies such as FIFA, UEFA and the FA, and also many of the leading Premiership clubs.

The delegates received a wide range of presentations from leading sports scientists on a number of key areas including nutritional recommendations, the impact on the immune function from training and playing, youth development and talent identification, coaching behaviour and learning environments, and the application of psychology in football.

There was also an insight into the research associated with developments in football technology, including pitch surfaces, footwear, apparel, and hardware – such as footballs, gloves and protective equipment.

The seminar was organised by Dr Ian Rollo, the Principal Scientist in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences, who is overseeing the knowledge transfer between Loughborough University and Leicester City Football Club.

Speaking at the event, Dr Ian Rollo said:

“We have been delighted to host this landmark event for the football industry.  We hope the seminar has provided invaluable insights into the latest football research, and given the delegates ideas and solutions that can be immediately applied at their clubs and associations, to get the best out of their players at all levels.”

Sven Göran Eriksson, Manager of Leicester City Football Club said:

“Science is playing an increasingly important role in football and many other sports. It is something I have been interested in throughout my managerial career. We consider many aspects of sports science at Leicester City and the analysis of player performance is crucial to the way we prepare for games.

“I was grateful to be given the opportunity to speak at this seminar and hopefully the club will continue to benefit from our excellent relationship with Loughborough University.”

The University hopes that the seminar will be the first of several events looking at how to apply science and technology to a variety of different sports.
