International handball comes to Loughborough

In the build up to the London 2012 Games, Loughborough University is to host one of the most exciting and fastest growing sports in the country.

The Great Britain Men’s Handball team will train at Loughborough between 7-12th March and play international matches against Turkey and Italy at the end of the week in the Sir David Wallace Sports Hall.

Forming an important part of their preparations for the London 2012 Olympic Games the matches will give the GB team a stiff test, as well as present the coaching team with chance to run the rule over their established stars and those pushing for a place in the squad.

The first international match is on Thursday, March 10, with Italy and Turkey playing each other (7.30pm start), and the following day sees Great Britain play Italy, again starting at 7.30pm.

Great Britain will then play Turkey on Saturday, March 12, starting at 3pm.

Entry to all the games is just £2 on the door, while schools can get free tickets by prior arrangement. For ticket enquiries please contact office@britishhandball.com

Handball is one of the fastest developing sports in the UK.  At Loughborough University the handball club was only formed in 2009, but already has over 70 members.

The club recently entered three Men's teams and a Women's team into the British Universities Handball Championships, which saw a record number of participants.

Mat Mulvey, Chairperson of the Loughborough University Handball Club, said:

"International handball coming to Loughborough is a great opportunity to watch an up-and-coming, fast-paced sport played at its highest level. Handball is huge in Europe and steadily growing in the UK. This is a great opportunity to get involved and come support our GB players. Who knows, it may be the new sport for you!"

The training camp also gives the GB handball squad the opportunity to spend time at Loughborough University, the official preparation camp headquarters for Team GB and Japan in the build up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

These agreements have also helped to create the opportunity for Loughborough to host international sporting events at the University, such as the England v Japan badminton fixture in October 2009 and the international handball in March 2011.
