Creative graduate business aims to bloom through the recession

Emma Britton

A Loughborough University textiles graduate has just launched her decorative glass company this month, after more than two years of riding the recession.

Emma Britton, 25, graduated from Loughborough in 2008 but struggled to find work in her chosen career path as a textile designer.  Following several unpaid work placements, she changed direction and started working for a leading glass manufacturer in Surrey. Emma combined her background in print design with her new found skills working with glass to create a stunning collection of floral glass kitchen and bathroom splashbacks, inspired by British suburbia.

‘Up the garden path’, features hand painted designs that are recreated using cutting edge digital technology and encapsulated in glass.  Featuring traditional flowers including sweetpeas, hydrangeas and foxgloves, the repeated designs are made to order in Emma’s Nottingham studio and can be tailored to fit any interior.

Emma’s exciting new venture is supported by Enterprise Inc, a scheme that gives students and graduates of East Midlands universities business start up training and a bursary to help them kick start their ideas.  Emma has also been supported by Loughborough University’s Student Enterprise Team and the local Business Link resource.

Loughborough Enterprise officer Amy Bowmar said. “Loughborough University has a strong tradition of producing enterprising students and graduates and it is vital that we support them as much as we can.”  She continued, “Emma is one of many talented young entrepreneurs to be supported by Enterprise Inc, a scheme the University has partnered since 2009.  We are delighted that the scheme has helped launch her new business and hope that it blooms!”
