Fulbright Scholar to give public lecture at Loughborough University

Thomas Bernard

Loughborough Fulbright Scholar and esteemed American academic Professor Thomas Bernard will be giving a public lecture at the University on Monday December 12.

The Fulbright Fellowship is a prestigious award made to internationally recognised researchers in the USA, enabling them to travel abroad to leading institutions and conduct collaborative research.

Professor Bernard, who is Chair of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at the University of South Florida, has spent the last four months at Loughborough working alongside Professors Ken Parsons and George Havenith.  During this time he has conducted research on heat exchange through clothing and updating ISO standards on heat stress.

The lecture will cover his latest research findings as well as his experiences as a Fulbright Scholar at the University.

Speaking about his research Professor Bernard said: “Heat exposure can have very serious consequences, resulting in illness and even death.  It is therefore vital to have methods for assessing heat stress, to enable the extent of the problem to be evaluated and predicted and measures taken to avoid unacceptable exposure.”

To address exposures to heat stress, Professor Bernard stresses the importance of international standards, which provide such methods, adding: “One particular standard, ISO 7243, has been used world-wide to prevent over-exposure to heat stress.  My work at Loughborough has focused on revising this standard to ensure it addresses all issues associated with heat exposure.”

The lecture, entitled ‘The Fulbright experience and research towards a new international standard for the prevention of illness and death due to heat stress’, is being held on Monday 12 December at the Loughborough Design School at 5pm.  Booking is essential and seats can be reserved by visiting: www.lboro.ac.uk/service/publicity/lectures
