Loughborough University student Emma Hollis has claimed two world records at the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) 2011 Short Course Swimming Championships in Sheffield.

Emma, who studies Geography at the University, broke the world record for the S8 category 800 metres freestyle.  Emma beat the previous best by almost 37 seconds in a time of 10.55:33.

The following day Emma recorded a second world record in the S8 400 metres individual medley, racing to a time 6:10.57 and beating the existing record by some 35 seconds.

Speaking after the swim Emma Hollis said:

“It’s crazy all the hard work has finally paid off, when I looked up I didn’t believe the scoreboard was right.”

Emma has had a strong year, winning five medals at the 2011 IPC European Championships in Berlin. A feature about Emma can be found on our London 2012 web site at: http://www.lboro.ac.uk/london2012/athletes/focus-on/emma-hollis/

Director of Swimming Ian Armiger said:

“Emma decided three months ago that she was going to target this event, but to smash two world records by such large margins is an exceptional performance.

“Emma’s performances were part of an outstanding weekend of swimming from our team...it’s what we do!”

Loughborough reclaimed the Short Course Championships with a winning score of 370, 95 points ahead of rivals Bath in second place.

Other highlights came from Rachel Lefley, Kate Hutchinson, Melanie Nocher and Tom Laxton, who all broke BUCS championship records.

There were also three first place finishes by Roberto Pavoni, with James Doolan and Laurent Carnol winning their two events.
