Loughborough staff turning Green into Gold

Green impact LogoLoughborough University is rallying its staff to get involved in a new scheme which recognises and rewards sustainable behaviour.

‘Green Impact’ is a national initiative that encourages individuals and departments to implement sustainable behaviours in the workplace and as a result, reduce their impact on the environment.

Staff teams of all sizes will be able to take part in the flexible project, which allows them to focus on the actions which are of most relevance to them and find their own ways of implementing environmental initiatives.

An online workbook, specifically tailored to Loughborough University, outlines a series of practical steps which are easy for staff to do and cost little or nothing to implement. Teams are awarded points for completing actions specified in the workbook, with a view to achieving Bronze or Silver status. The coveted Gold award will then be presented at a special award ceremony to the team with the most points.

The ‘Green Impact’ scheme is the latest addition to the Loughborough University’s environmental awareness campaign, known as ‘It’s Better OFF to be Sustainable’.

Jenny Turner, Energy Technician and co-ordinator of ‘It’s Better OFF’, explains:

“Green Impact’ is a fantastic opportunity for Loughborough University. We are lucky to have so many staff and students already working to improve sustainability at Loughborough and ‘Green Impact’ will give us the ability to measure and reward the hard work being done, whilst raising awareness in an interactive, competitive and fun way.

“The Students’ Union has been part of the national ‘Green Impact’ scheme for many years and they achieved Green Impact Gold in the 2010-11 academic year, with the highest overall points of all the student unions taking part. So it’s about time we took part as a University.

“It’s Better OFF has now been running for two and half years and has seen fantastic success. It is now time to boost the campaign and provide a structure for promoting and rewarding positive environmental behaviours.”

The University launched ‘Green Impact’ to its staff this month and is now recruiting teams from across campus to begin working on implementing their sustainable actions.
