International textiles conference to examine traditional skills

An international conference examining the role of traditional skills in modern textiles is taking place at Loughborough University.

Organised by the School of the Arts Textiles Research Group, the two day symposium starts on November 16.  Through a series of illustrated presentations and panel discussions by leading artists, designers, researchers and technologists, the event will seek to explore and define the role of hand skills and the value of process in contemporary textiles.

Speaking about the conference Dr Faith Kane, a member of the Textiles Research Group, said: “With delegates from the USA, Canada, Brazil, Portugal, India, Denmark and the UK, we are looking forward to a stimulating and thought provoking event.  We hope it will inspire and influence directions in research, teaching and enterprise within the field of textile design.”

The symposium will coincide with a second showing of the research group’s recent TRIP exhibition, taking place in the Loughborough Design School gallery space.
