Construction of £40 million Manufacturing Technology Centre completed

The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) – of which Loughborough University is a key research partner – has moved into its new multi-million pound facility.

Based at Ansty Park in Coventry, the facility is the result of a £40 million joint investment from Advantage West Midlands and the East Midlands Development Agency.  In total, £130 million of public and private sector investments will be made in the centre over the next ten years.

The world-class MTC is one of seven research facilities appointed to run the first of the Government’s new generation of elite Technology Innovation Centres (TICs).  It brings together industrial giants, including Rolls-Royce, Aero Engine Controls and Airbus UK, with expert researchers from the Universities of Loughborough, Birmingham and Nottingham and TWI Ltd, the operating division of The Welding Institute.

The MTC’s main objective is to develop innovative ideas from academia and convert them into novel practical manufacturing solutions to improve the business performance of UK manufacturers.

Loughborough’s involvement in the MTC is being led by Professor Rob Parkin from the University’s Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.  He said: “The MTC is a fantastic opportunity for our research to be followed through to industry application.  This means that research carried out by Loughborough academics can make a real difference to UK manufacturing.”
