Loughborough Professor appointed as Specialist Adviser on Financial Services Bill

Alistair Milne, Professor of Financial Economics at Loughborough University, will be advising Parliament on the Financial Services Bill – proposed new legislation that will transform financial regulation in the UK.

He has been appointed as one of two Specialist Advisers to the Joint Committee responsible for scrutinising the Bill, which will break up the Financial Services Authority and transfer responsibility for prudential supervision back to the Bank of England.

The Committee is expected to publish its report in December.

Professor Milne (who joined Loughborough University’s School of Business and Economics in July this year) has become a regular, and highly sought after, commentator on financial issues.

A former reader in Banking and Finance at Cass Business School, he is the author of “The Fall of the House of Credit” – a comprehensive account of the global financial crisis.  He has acted as a consultant to the Financial Services Authority, the European Commission, and to several private sector institutions and trade bodies, and held positions at HM Treasury and the national statistics office of Malawi.

His appointment as Specialist Adviser provides further evidence of the expertise and international influence of academic staff within the School of Business and Economics.  Fellow Economics Professor David Llewellyn was elected as Vice Chairman of the Board of the Banking Stakeholder Group at the European Banking Authority (EBA) earlier this year.
