University unveils new season of inaugural lectures

Professor Tony Croft will chart the development of mathematics support

Loughborough University has announced its next season of inaugural lectures, taking place at the campus throughout autumn.

Inaugural lectures have been an essential feature of university life for centuries, celebrating the appointment of new professors across all academic areas.  At Loughborough the lectures are open to staff, students and members of the public and cover a variety of research topics.

The inaugural lectures taking place for the autumn 2011 series are:

Wednesday 5 October

Professor Tony Croft from the University’s Mathematics Education Centre will chart the development of mathematics support over the last 20 years, illustrating the many ways that students’ experience of higher education has been enhanced as a consequence.

Wednesday 26 October

In this lecture Professor Jeremy Coupland from the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering will explain why light provides such a powerful measurement tool.  The recent advances in optics and laser technology will be demonstrated and the impact of optical metrology will be discussed.

Wednesday 16 November

Humans follow one conversation by using their listening and visual senses, together with sophisticated signal processing in their brains.  In this lecture Professor Jonathan Chambers from the School of Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering will discuss his research challenge to automate this skill.

Wednesday 7 December

Professor Moya Lloyd from the Department of Politics, History and International Relations will explore the relation between political theory and its ‘others’; those topics or areas that have traditionally been conceived of as apolitical.
