Conference to help guide the way to responsible sourcing

A Loughborough University-led network, set up to provide advice and guidance on responsible sourcing for the UK construction industry, is holding its first conference.

The construction sector is being subjected to growing stakeholder expectations about the accountability, transparency and legitimacy of its operations. This arises from concerns about global supply chains, labour and welfare conditions, environmental impacts, bribery and corruption. Responsible sourcing is about managing these issues so that customers can be more confident about the origin of the materials they are purchasing.

The APRES (Action Programme on Responsible Sourcing) network was established in 2010, with funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).  Based in the University’s School of Civil and Building Engineering, it brings together academic experts and industry specialists to share knowledge and develop new ideas.

APRES Network Manager Dr Jacqui Glass explains: “The Government is expecting the industry to be purchasing at least 25% of all construction products through responsible sourcing schemes by 2012 and the UK’s major contractors have set an aspirational goal of 100% by 2015, so the timing of the APRES conference is no coincidence – there is much work to do to achieve these targets.”

The conference, entitled ‘Responsible sourcing of construction products: Drivers, performance and impact’, is taking place on November 23 – 24 2011 and will feature a keynote presentation on responsible sourcing for the 2012 Olympics. Delegates will also hear about progress towards industry and Government targets, what responsible manufacturers are doing to ensure their products are available to the market and also hear about Tesco’s achievements on sustainable construction.
