Former Loughborough Sports Scholar is a record breaking World Champion

Dan Greaves

Former Loughborough University student Dan Greaves has claimed a gold medal, and a new world record, at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch.

The Athens 2004 Paralympic Champion defended his World Championship title in the F44 discus with a throw of 58.98 metres, beating his previous best by over three metres.

Dan completed a Masters degree in Sport and Leisure Management in 2009, having graduated from the University in Sport and Exercise Science in 2006.

During his time as a Loughborough student Dan was supported with funding through the University’s Sports Scholarship scheme.

Speaking of his achievements Dan Greaves said:

“I was really confident going into the competition and I was a bit annoyed to post two no-throws in the opening three, but I re-grouped and told myself to stick to what I do in training and I was so much more relaxed after that.

“This is amazing. I lost my way a bit after finishing third in Beijing (2008) but I re-focused and this win stands me in good stead for London (2012).”

The 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships are taking place in Christchurch, New Zealand from 22 – 30 January. It is the sixth time the event has been held. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) is the global governing body of the Paralympic Movement.
