Loughborough University says YES to engineering enterprise

The second Engineering Young Entrepreneurs Scheme (YES) competition will take place at the Novotel East Midlands Hotel in Long Eaton from 23 – 26 May.

The competition is organised by Loughborough University in conjunction with the University of Nottingham and the Rotary Club of Loughborough Beacon.  It is designed to encourage enterprise among postgraduate research students and postdoctoral research staff.

Engineering YES, which is free to enter and has a top prize of £2,000, has been developed to raise awareness of the commercialisation of engineering ideas and involves an intensive three days of preparation and presentations.

The 2010 competition will involve 11 teams of five drawn from local Higher Education Institutions.  Organisations represented include the Universities of Birmingham, Loughborough, Nottingham and De Montfort.

During the course of the competition participants must develop a business plan for an imaginary start-up company, which will then be presented to a panel of judges.  Throughout the three-day event speakers and mentors from the world of industry and business will advise and guide the teams as they develop their business plan. These include representatives from local venture capitalist firms and regional business development organisations.

In addition to the winning prize money, there are also prizes for ‘Teamwork’, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Loughborough Beacon, and ‘Best Intellectual Property’, sponsored by patent and trademark attorneys Potter Clarkson.  There will also be a prize for the ‘Best Elevator Pitch', sponsored by the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
