Active awareness week planned for University staff

It's Better Off to Walk

It's Better Off to walk

Staff across Loughborough University are being encouraged to ditch their cars in favour of foot or pedal power next week (10-14 May) as part of the campus-wide It’s Better OFF to be active week.

And it’s not just sustainable transport that’s being promoted. Employees are being encouraged to learn about leading a healthier lifestyle through improving diet and exercise habits and giving up smoking, and staff from Charnwood Borough Council will also be on hand to offer free health checks.

Members of the University’s executive leadership team are lined up to do their bit and will lead a series of campus walks designed as part of the last year’s centenary celebrations with help from local historian Ernie Miller.

For cyclists, the University security team is offering free bike tagging, whilst staff seeking company on their way into work will be able to register for the Walking Budi and Cycling Budi schemes.

Organisers will also use the week to raise awareness of the various health and sustainability activities, facilities and groups available on campus for staff.

Sustainability manager Jo Hasbury hopes the week will persuade employees to review their travel habits and reflect on their levels of physical activity.

“It’s Better OFF to be active is about encouraging staff to be more physically active, to improve their health and well-being and at the same time reduce carbon emissions and save money,“ she said.

“The University has such a strong reputation for sport and physical activity and is also committed to reducing its carbon emissions by 48% by 2020. This week brings both elements together and we hope events like this will raise awareness of or sustainability goals and play a big part in ultimately achieving them.”

It’s Better OFF to be active is part of the University’s It’s Better OFF sustainability campaign which was launched in 2009 to increase staff awareness of climate change and provide practical information to help improve the environment. In its first year the campaign helped the University reduce its carbon footprint by 5%, which equated to a 708 tonne reduction in CO2.
