Work has officially started on Loughborough University’s new Design Centre, marked by the cutting of the first sod of land by Vice Chancellor Professor Shirley Pearce.

The Design Centre is the first project of a wider master plan for the East Park area of the campus, much of which was built in the 1960s.

The 7,760 m² building will provide state-of-the-art facilities for the various design disciplines at the University, including the Department of Design and Technology, the Ergonomics and Safety Research Institute (ESRI), the Department of Ergonomics and the School of Art and Design (LUSAD).  It will feature innovative teaching and lecture space, workshops, offices, research space, studios, computer suites, a cafe and display area.

The Centre has been designed by Nicholas Burwell Architects and will be an eye-catching building due to the extensive use of zinc cladding and sheer glass surfaces on the external envelope.  An internal ‘street’ will form a main circulation space for students and staff, with glazed roof lights overhead to make the area bright and airy.

With contractors Shepherd Construction planning an early summer 2011 completion, it is anticipated that staff will move into the building for the start of the 2011/2012 academic year.

Professor Pearce said: “It is great to see work get underway on this important building.  Once completed it will provide a focal point for the different design related disciplines at the University, encouraging multi-disciplinary research and further enhancing links with business and industry.”

Phil Greer, Managing Director East for Shepherd Construction, added: “We are delighted to be working with Loughborough University once again and look forward to delivering this iconic building in 2011.”
