Eleven swimmers based at Loughborough University have been selected for the English Commonwealth Games squad.

World record holder Liam Tancock, a 2012 sports scholar and Loughborough College student, leads the group who all reached the qualification standard at the recent British Gas Swimming Championships in Sheffield to book their places on the plane to New Delhi in October.

Francesca Halsall, Joanne Jackson, Elizabeth Simmonds and Amy Smith, Robert Bale, Ross Davenport, Daniel Fogg, Grant Turner, Joe Roebuck and Roberto Pavoni also qualify, with the prospect of more Loughborough swimmers joining the team after two further qualifying events to be staged in August to fill the remaining 13 places.

Davenport collected two gold medals at the last games in Melbourne, 2006.

The University’s pool is one of five national Intensive Training Centres operated by British Swimming, providing a base for a host of world class swimmers.

The rest of the England swimming team will be selected following the LEN European Championships in Budapest from 4 to 15 August and the British Gas ASA National Championships from 18 to 21 August in Sunderland.

There should also be Loughborough representation in the Welsh and Scottish teams, with David Davies and Lowri Tynan flying the flag for the red dragon while 2012 sports scholar Caitlin McClatchey is in line to swim for Scotland at the Games.

Swimming coach at the University Steve Bayley said: “It’s testament to the superb facilities and environment the University supplies that has helped the guys and girls fulfil their potential and achieve their ambition to reach the 2010 Games.

“There are two events to go before the teams are finalised so we will hopefully see a few more names form Loughborough in there as well.”
