Helping to inspire the next generation of Chemistry students

School students take part in the ‘Top of the Bench’ competition at Loughborough University

A national competition aimed at inspiring the next generation of chemistry students recently took place at Loughborough University.

The annual ‘Top of the Bench’ competition is organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and this year was hosted by the University’s Department of Chemistry.

Young people aged between 14 and 16 from across the country can take part in the contest.  In teams of four their knowledge of chemistry is tested through a series of practical and written exercises, and to make the final they have to win regional heats.

This year a team from North Halifax Grammar School won the ‘Top of the Bench’ competition.  Each team member received gift tokens and £500 for their school to spend on scientific equipment.  The runner-up team was from Northgate Grammar School in Dereham, Norfolk, and the Jacqui Clee award for the most outstanding contribution to the competition was presented to Kimberley Spoors from Egglescliffe School in Cleveland.

For more information about entering next year's competition contact Dr Robert Bowles at the RSC by calling 01223 432340, or emailing education@rsc.org.
