Loughborough University joins forces with businesses to show how maths adds up to a great career

Highflying employees from some of the country’s leading businesses will gather at Loughborough University on Thursday (April 15) to give school students the inside knowledge on how maths helped to launch their careers.

Employees from Capital One, Laing O’Rourke, Pick Everard, Bombardier Transportation UK and one of the University’s rugby experts will address around 70 year 10 students at the Maths at Work conference.

The event will aim to show the students from Burleigh Community College, Beauchamp College,  De Lisle Catholic Science College, Groby Community College and King Edward VII College that continuing to study maths at AS, A and degree level could significantly benefit their future careers.

The conference has been organised by the University’s Student Outreach and Recruitment Office, its Maths Education Centre and the East Midlands Further Mathematics Support Programme.

Dr Rod Bond from the University’s Mathematics Education Centre said: “The conference will emphasise the importance of mathematics in the workplace to young people and will hopefully inspire participants to work hard at their GCSE studies.  It is a golden opportunity for teachers who attend the event to learn more about how mathematics is used in the workplace.”

The day-long conference will also include a tour of the campus, led by some of the University’s undergraduate students, to give attendees an insight into life at university.
