Chinese Olympic hero and international entrepreneur visits Loughborough University

The Chinese Olympic gold medallist and founder of one of the world's fastest growing sporting goods manufacturers, Dr Li Ning recently visited the University.

The Loughborough honorary graduate was taken on a tour of the region by the East Midlands Development Agency (emda) to explore opportunities for collaborations with organisations based in the area.  One of his key visits was to the University’s Sports Technology Institute (STI).

The STI is a £15million initiative in partnership with emda to boost research and enterprise in the sporting goods sector. It is home to the world's largest university-based research group in this field and brings together some of the country’s top researchers and the world’s leading sporting goods brands, working on the design, simulation, testing and manufacture of cutting edge sports equipment. The Sports Technology Research Group aim to make a positive, global impact, delivering social and economic benefit through excellent teaching, research and enterprise in sport related engineering.

During his visit to the Institute Dr Li expressed an interest in exploring a range of research and innovation collaborations with the Loughborough Group. Dr Li was shown some of the Institute’s bespoke equipment including golf robots, ball kicking/launching robots and machines developed to test athletic footwear and advanced sports garments.

Speaking about the visit Professor Mike Caine, director of the STI, said: “It was a pleasure to host Dr Li and to discuss potential research and enterprise collaborations with him.  Li Ning's visit is testimony to Loughborough University's growing reach on a global stage.  The Sports Technology Research Group is proud to partner many of the world's leading sporting goods brands and regard the Li Ning Company as an exciting potential collaborator.”

Following his visit to the STI Dr Li met with Loughborough’s Vice Chancellor Professor Shirley Pearce and other senior University staff.

Professor Pearce said: “It was a great pleasure to welcome back a Loughborough honorary graduate of such distinction and show him one of our world-leading research facilities.”
