Loughborough University-based athletes aiming for glory in London 2012 will be able to train on a replica of the surface set to be used in the Olympic stadium.

As one of UK Athletics’ national performance centres, the University’s High Performance Athletics Centre has been picked by UKA as one of only two venues to have the surface installed.

Athletes based at Loughborough will be able to train on an indoor straight as well as long and triple jump runways and pole vault and high jump areas constructed of the same Mondo FX track that will be laid in the 80,000 seat arena in East London.

The areas, to be installed this month with the help of a £220,000 grant made to UKA by the London Marathon Charitable Trust, mean that Loughborough University joins a distinguished list of just ten venues around the world to already boast the track surface. The Lee Valley Athletics Centre in London is also receiving sections of the track.

Chris Earle, director of sport at Loughborough University said: “It’s a feather in the University’s cap that our athletes will be able to prepare on the same surface they could be competing on in 2012.

“Our coaches and support staff pride themselves on giving our elite athletes every possible chance of success when they compete and the installation of some sections of the Olympic athletics surface in the HiPAC will only enhance their ability to do just that.”
