University seeks nominations for student community awards

Loughborough residents are being encouraged to nominate students for two prizes awarded annually by the University in recognition of good work in the community or good community relations.

The T S Shipman and Hannah Community prizes are awarded to a student or group of students who have had a positive impact in the local community.

The T S Shipman Prize is given to students of the University or College who are considered to have contributed most to the development or co-operation and aid between the institutions and the local community.

The prize of £600 comes from a fund presented to the University by the T S Shipman Trust, established by the former joint Managing Director of Leicester company AA Jones and Shipman - one of the largest machine tool manufacturers in Britain in the 1960s.

The Hannah Community Prize seeks to recognise students for showing acts of kindness or for general good neighbourliness. Nominations for this prize are usually made without students’ knowledge.

The £180 award uses funds originally bequeathed to the University in memory of Mr George Alexander Hannah who studied at Loughborough during his retirement.

In 2009 three students were presented with prizes as part of these two award schemes and an awards ceremony will be held again this year. The Vice Chancellor of the University Professor Shirley Pearce will make the presentations together with the Mayor of Charnwood.

“We are very pleased to be able to award these prizes to encourage and reward the many students who contribute positivity to the local community,” said University community relations officer Alison Barlow. “Year on year the wide range of nominations has highlighted the increasing and varied contribution many of our students are making locally.

“I’d encourage local residents to recognise their good student neighbours and those that have made positive contributions to their local community over the last year by submitting a nomination for one of these two awards.”

Nominations for these awards can be made by any member of the Charnwood community and should be submitted to the University by Friday 16 April. Further information is available from Martine Ashby on 01509 222426 or M.A.Ashby@lboro.ac.uk.   A nomination form is also available by logging on to: www.lboro.ac.uk/admin/ar/student/prizes/university_nominated/index.htm
