Creating a buzz about science and engineering

Loughborough University has teamed up with Snibston Discovery Museum to get local school children excited about science and engineering.

The University has partnered with Snibston Discovery Museum, East Midlands Science and Learning Centre and the Leicestershire Education Business Company as part of National Engineering and Science Week to host a series of activity days based at the museum.

The Science@work celebration is an exciting programme of demonstrations and workshops designed to explore the impact of science and technology on our lives for children aged 11 – 16 (key stage three and four).

The events take place from 22 – 29 March at the museum with Loughborough academics running three of the five dates.

Staff from the Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics and Ergonomics departments will be providing their expertise.

Topics set to be covered include forensic finger printing and mechanics in action as well as other hands on activities showcasing different areas of science and engineering.

Loughborough University Student Outreach and Recruitment Manager, Justine Sanders who is involved in co-ordinating the event, said: “This a great opportunity for local school children to get hands on experience of science and engineering to better understand what real life scientists and engineers do.

“The event is also a great opportunity to bring University staff and local school children together to raise the profile of the work that is carried out at the University.”
