Phase Vision ranks highly in the Telegraph’s Top 50 University spinout companies

Phase Vision ranked 26th in the new national league table for university spinout companies.

Phase Vision, the technology leader in white light metrology and Loughborough University spinout, has achieved 26th place in a new national league table for university spinout companies.

The Telegraph’s supplement Your Business has just begun tracking the progress of 50 highly promising university spinouts to show the breadth of cutting edge technology emerging from Britain's universities.   It has used a scoring system developed by YouNoodle (www.younoodle.com), the global directory of startups, which currently includes more than 25,000 companies and pulls in over 150,000 startup news stories every day.  The site allows business owners, customers and investors to measure and track both the progress and news stories associated with any startup online.

Phase Vision was formed in 2002 as a consultancy spinout from Loughborough University, using technology developed by the world-renowned Optical Engineering Research Group at Loughborough University’s School of Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering.   In 2008, the company started development of a breakthrough fringe projection shape measurement system. After extensive beta trials in 2009, the same year the company secured funding of over £1.4M, Phase Vision’s new scanners are set to launch in early 2010.

Fringe projection, or structured light, is a high-speed form of optical measurement, capturing millions of measurements in seconds.  The technique is many times faster and more accurate than the laser scanners typically used today, and has the potential for significant impact across a range of industries.  For example, improving the performance and efficiency of jet engines, and reducing the drag on an aircraft’s wing, thus generating enormous fuel savings for airlines, through optimised manufacturing.
“We’re incredibly proud of the product we’ve created,” stated Ralph Weir, CEO of Phase Vision.  “Our advanced algorithms solve many of the challenges of shape measurement using fringe projection.  What we are building is based on a decade of research, and finally wraps structured light measurement into a product which is both usable and accessible to the wider market”.
Professor Phill Dickens, Loughborough University’s Pro Vice Chancellor Enterprise added:  “Phase Vision is an excellent example of how the University’s innovative research can be commercialised to deliver impact.  It is excellent to see the company’s impact recognised in The Telegraph’s league table for university spinouts.”
