Loughborough study to examine effects of breast cancer treatment

A new Loughborough University study aims to discover the effects of breast cancer treatment on patients’ ability to manage day-to-day tasks.

Existing research suggests that some patients receiving chemotherapy treatment may experience side effects which impact on their memory and concentration.

Researchers in Loughborough University’s School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences  are working with the Leicester Royal Infirmary to find out more about how treatment affects patients, and are asking ladies with breast cancer who are about to receive chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy treatment to sign up to the study.

Participants will be asked to answer an online or paper questionnaire on four occasions; before treatment starts then at four, eight and 12 month intervals. The research team is also looking to recruit ladies interested in keeping a paper or audio diary for four months during their treatment.

As well as helping gain a better understanding of issue affecting patients, lead researcher Catherine Lawrence hopes the study will also obtain a clearer picture of the difficulties breast cancer patients experience while carrying out their daily tasks, both during and after treatment and when returning to work.

“We hope to raise awareness in patients, healthcare professionals, employers and the general public of the effects of chemotherapy treatment,” said Miss Lawrence.

“We would like women to get the support they need to continue performing their everyday tasks successfully and identify where any minor adjustments are necessary.”

All participants will receive a summary of the research findings and will be kept up-to-date on the experiences of the group.

Women with no history of cancer are also being recruited to the project as part of a control group.

Anyone interested in signing up to the study should contact Catherine Lawrence directly on: 01509 228151 or by email at C.L.Lawrence@lboro.ac.uk
