Community members donate bird boxes to University conservation project

Two Loughborough residents have donated 17 handmade bird boxes to the University conservation project at Burleigh Wood.

Retired University administrator Nicholas Ball, who donated 16 of the 17 boxes, has been making a bird box every other day since Christmas.

After taking early retirement from his position due to ill health Mr Ball visited the wood as part of his treatment which required him to undertake an hour’s exercise every day.

“I felt that I wanted to give something back to the University,” said Mr Ball. “The wood is very beautiful and it’s good that the University is dedicated to giving something back to the community by conserving it and making it interesting for all to use.”

The 17th bird box is donated by Alan Akins, another local resident.

The donation of the bird boxes is to help with the conservation project being led by the University’s sustainability manager Jo Hasbury.  Last Wednesday more than 15 student volunteers helped in the conservation work under the guidance of Jo and the University’s two full time arborists.

More volunteer days are planned for the future which Jo hopes will include members of the local community.

“The Woodland Conservation Volunteer Day was really successful,” she said.  “The University is proud of its green campus and is committed to protecting its biodiversity, particularly its ancient woodlands like Burleigh Woods, which are an important part of the estate.

“We are hoping to carry out the project two to three times a year and, following this second successful student volunteer pilot, we hope to open up the voluntary days for the local community to come along.”
