Loughborough University swimmers helped power the British team to victory over Germany in their 'Duel in the Pool' in the Wales National Pool in Swansea last weekend.

The GB team ran out 207-109 winners in the head-to-head. Loughborough's World Champion Liam Tancock won the men's 100m backstroke with a time of 55.30 seconds while David Davies led the way in the 1,500m freestyle, followed by teammate Daniel Fogg.

The University's Ross Davenport came second in the men's 200m freestyle to world champion Paul Biedermann.

In the women's races, Loughborough's Lizzie  Simmonds won the 100m backstroke and Fran Halsall won the first race of the day as she touched first in the women's 50m Butterfly after she beat Germany's Lisa Vitting into second place. Jo Jackson came home second in the 200m freestyle.

Loughborough University's director of swimming Ian Armiger said: "We had a number of swimmers on the team and out of that group we scored a lot of points for the British team. They did a great job.

"We're five weeks out from the biggest competition of this training cycle which is the British Gas Championships in Sheffield at end of March, and they are the qualifiers for the Commonwealth Games.

"We like to race into the major competitions and we've had two good weekends now, so we're very pleased."

The British Gas Championships will take place over 6 days, from Monday 29th March to Saturday 3rd April 2010 at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Sheffield. Visit www.swimming.org for more details.
