Strong Loughborough Students presence in England hockey squad

Loughborough Students past and present are well represented in the English hockey squad heading out to Delhi for the 2010 World Cup today (18/2/10).

Current student Richard Smith, who made his debut against Germany last summer, takes his place alongside Loughborough Students teammate Nick Catlin.

They are joined by former University students Glenn Kirkham, Richard Alexander, Barry Middleton and Iain Mackay plus fellow ex-Loughborough Students player Ali Wilson.

The English side is lead by coach Jason Lee, another former student and player/coach for the University's Premier Division side.

Loughborough's men's hockey coach David Ralph was full of praise for full-back Smith: "Richard has been a key player for us over the past couple of years," he said.

"He only broke into the England side less than a year ago and his development has come on even more since then. We've actually not seen as much as we'd like of him since he's been an England player but that's a mark of the success he's had.

"It is great to see so many guys with Loughborough University connections involved in the squad and that's the way it has been for the last five years or so. We like to think that's a result of the strong system we've got here."

The England squad will go through their paces in a training camp in Doha before they kick off their Pool B campaign on 28 February against 2009 Champions Trophy winners and World No.2 Australia.

They face South Africa two days later before their Asian double header against Pakistan on Thursday 4 March and India on 6 March. World No.3 Spain round off England's tough set of pool fixtures on Monday 8 March.
