Taste of student life on offer to local school kids

Pupils from a local school were able to sample life as art and design students at a special event held at Loughborough University.

Young people from the town’s Garendon High School were invited to the campus to take part in pottery, textiles and animation workshops led by staff from the School of Art and Design.

The event was organised by the University’s Outreach and Recruitment team and the School of Art and Design, and was aimed at giving young people who have little or no family experience of higher education a taste of life as a university student.

Pupils had fun creating animation films with their own plasticine models, throwing pots on a wheel and making key rings.  At the end of the day the group were shown around the School to look at the artwork of current undergraduate students for further inspiration.

Speaking about the event Andy Grimley, the Resources Liaison Officer at Garendon High School, said: “Many young people have interest, abilities and potential to succeed in the field of art and design.  Pupils from Garendon have been fortunate to enjoy a valuable, exciting and insightful experience at the School of Art and Design, which has encouraged them to aspire to a future in art and design and to better understand the lifestyle of a typical student in higher education.”

The animation films created by the Garendon pupils can be viewed online at:
