Gymnasts jump for joy after BUCS success

Loughborough University cart-wheeled off with the top team honours from last weekend's British Universities & Colleges (BUCS) Gymnastics Championships in Aldershot.

The University took first place in both men's and women's artistic gymnastics team competitions, beating Leeds Met into second place in both contests, the Yorkshire team having won the 2009 men's title.

There were individual honours for a host of Loughborough names with Rebecca Eastling winning gold on the vault and Natalie Hopkins bronze on the beam.

For the men, Matthew Henley: took an all-around bronze medal after finishing first on vault and second on the high bar, Craig Woodhams: came third all-around with second places on floor and parallel bars and a third on the rings, James Henderson came third on floor and Nathaniel Leney third on parallel bars.

Coach George Predescu said: "After qualifying two gymnasts from our team to represent Great Britain at the World Student Games in 2009, these results are our biggest success in less than a year on the University sport stage."

The winning teams comprised:

Women: Kimberley Honey, Amy Drinkall, Maxine Glennister, Natalie Hopkins, Rebecca Eastling, Hayley Robson, Kathryn Tomson, Rachel Grant

Men: Matthew Henley, James Henderson, Mitchell Jarvis (pictured), Robert Blackman, Nathaniel Leney.
