Loughborough University's badminton stars will be donning national colours on Tuesday (16 Feb) as they head to Warsaw for the Thomas and Uber Cup qualifiers.

The international team tournament sees 19-year-old student Martin Campbell representing Scotland in the men's Thomas Cup while Beijing Olympian Anthony Clarke, who trains at the University, will be competing for England, fresh from his historic ninth consecutive men's doubles title at last weekend's English National Championships.

In the Women's Uber Cup, which runs alongside the Men's tournament, 19-year-old student Kate Robertshaw and Sam Ward, a local athlete who trains at the University will be in the England line up, while 20-year-old Rachel Thomas takes her place in the Welsh squad.

Head badminton coach at Loughborough Mike Adams was delighted to see so many of his charges getting national recognition:

"Since I've been here this is the first time I've had any representative guys. I think it's fair to say that outside the national badminton centre at Milton Keynes we've got the largest contingent of internationals and we're very happy that we've got players going forward for representative honours."

The team event is on a par with tennis's Davis and Fed Cups and the week's action will determine who goes forward from the European zone to get to the finals in Kuala Lumpur in May this year.

Team GB coach Andy Wood paid tribute to the strength of Loughborough's team:  "Credit has to go to Mike. He has a whole gang of players here now from all the home countries who are the best players in those countries. This event should provide some good guidelines in terms of Commonwealth Games selection later this year, and it obviously bodes well for London 2012.

"These players are all pushing hard and they're all young, so there's plenty of scope for improvement."
