Pioneering medical company to collaborate with University

A pioneering medical devices company is to collaborate with experts at Loughborough University on the development of an innovative new product.

Mediplus, a company at the forefront of innovation in the medical devices sector, is enlisting the help of academics at Loughborough’s departments of Materials and Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering on the development of a new catheter.

Mediplus is a family business based in High Wycombe, Bucks, which was set up in 1986 by chairman Bob Urie.

He said: “We are known as an innovative company and have developed several unique patented products.

“We were in the process of developing a new catheter and hit some particular technical obstacles. We realised that we needed a bit of cutting edge science to overcome them which is why we turned to Loughborough.’’

Mr Urie is himself an alumni of Loughborough, having studied Industrial Chemistry at the University between 1964 and 1968.

He said: “It is great to be able to work with Loughborough University, particularly with the polymer engineering sector, which is an area that formed one element of my degree at Loughborough.’’
The collaboration will take the form of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), a government subsidised scheme that enables organisations to access the University’s expertise. A recently qualified graduate will be employed to work on the project at Mediplus, while liaising on a weekly basis with experts at the University.

Professor Phill Dickens, Pro Vice Chancellor (Enterprise) said: “I am delighted that we will be partnering a company founded by one of our alumni.”

He continued: “We have an excellent track record in partnering organisations from many sectors to benefit from our expertise, and the opportunity to engage with forward-thinking organisations such as Mediplus ensures our research is applied for maximum impact.”
