Honorary degrees awarded at winter ceremonies

The friends and family of hundreds of Loughborough students will gather at the University on Monday (20 December) for this year’s winter degree ceremonies.

The event marks the formal conclusion of many years’ hard work for the students, who will be presented with a range of undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications by the University Chancellor, Sir Nigel Rudd.

Also at the ceremonies, honorary degrees will be conferred upon three distinguished people.

At 10.30am, Tana Utley, Chief Technology Officer of Caterpillar Inc, will be presented with the award of Honorary Doctor of Technology (Hon DTech), in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the leadership of engineering in a multi-national company.

Then at 1.45pm, President Yu Lizhong, President of East China Normal University, one of China’s leading higher education institutions, will receive the award of Honorary Doctor of Science (Hon DSc) for his outstanding contribution to education in China, particularly in the field of estuarine and coastal research.

At the final ceremony of the day, at 4.30pm, the founder chairman of The Royal Anniversary Trust, Sir Robin Gill KCVO, will be presented with the award of Honorary Doctor of Letters (Hon DLitt), in recognition of his outstanding service to the promotion of higher and further education through the work of the Royal Anniversary Trust and The Queen's Anniversary Prizes for Higher Education.

Professor Shirley Pearce says the University is proud to recognise the achievements of such outstanding individuals. “Through the award of an honorary degree we are able to acknowledge the huge contribution that Tana Utley, President Yu Lizhong and Sir Robin Gill are making to society,” she said. “We are delighted to be able to welcome them into the Loughborough University community.”
