Fran wins Sunday Times Young Sportswoman of the Year Award

Loughborough's Francesca Halsall has won the Sunday Times Young Sportswoman of the Year Award 2010.

Fran, a member of the Loughborough University Swimming Squad and coached by Ben Titley, secured the award after an outstanding season.

In August at the European Championships in Budapest Fran became Britain’s most successful female swimmer ever to compete at the Euros, returning with a five-medal haul which included two golds, two silvers and a bronze.

Later in the year swimming for England, Fran won another five medals in at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, winning one gold, three silvers and a bronze.

Director of Swimming, Ian Armiger said:

“Fran has had a fantastic year. Her achievements put her right up with the best swimmers in the world, and one of the country’s top sportswomen.

“Not only are we delighted for Fran, but her award also demonstrates the excellence achieved by the Loughborough University Swimming Programme, that continues to develop our swimmers to produce outstanding results at international competitions.”

The Sunday Times initiated the awards in 1988 to celebrate all aspects of women’s sport. In the past 22 years, some of the country’s greatest sporting names have been honoured. Previous winners include Sally Gunnell, Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, Denise Lewis, Dame Kelly Holmes, Rebecca Adlington and Victoria Pendleton.
