Loughborough University to host UK - Japan sports technology event

Loughborough University has secured funding to host a three day conference next February to focus on the growing discipline of Sports Technology.

The event is set to attract Sports Technologists and experts from the fields of mechanical engineering, biomechanics, manufacturing engineering, kinetics, materials and aerodynamics. It will bring together researchers from the UK and Japan to share research and explore opportunities for further collaboration.

Funding for the event was awarded to the University’s Dr Ruth Goodridge from the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).  Professor Kozo Hiramatsu, Director of JSPS London said: “We are very pleased to make the first award of our UK-JSPS Alumni Symposium Scheme to Dr Ruth Goodridge at Loughborough University. We recognise Loughborough as the leading university in the UK for sports technology and we hope the multi-disciplinary nature of this symposium will bring together the best minds in a range of engineering and biological disciplines from the UK and Japan, and high impact research collaborations will result.”

With Loughborough confirmed as the base and final preparation camp for the Japanese and GB Olympic squads in 2012, the University is the ideal venue for the conference with strong ties already linked with Japan. Preparations are already underway to host the Japanese visitors, with language and cultural programs on offer to University staff and chefs who have undertaken secondments to Japan to learn about traditional Japanese cuisine.

Dr Goodridge is eagerly anticipating the three day event: “Loughborough University has an international reputation for sport and engineering and our Sports Technology Institute’s expertise underpins many of the world’s ground breaking products. We will be able to offer some exciting speakers for the event, including Japan’s leading academic sports engineers and leading industry experts from the likes of Asics and Mizuno, as well as welcoming official funding bodies in order that mechanisms are in place to progress and explore collaborative projects further.

“The use and application of engineering practice and technology in sport is becoming increasingly essential when addressing the desire to optimise athlete performance and provide protection from injury, enhance measurement and evaluation techniques as well as in exploiting advanced manufacturing techniques for product innovation. The exchange of expertise through events such as this symposium is vital for new technologies for sporting applications to develop.”

Professor Sadayuki Ujihashi from Tokyo Institute of Technology will be the lead academic within the Japanese visitors, who will all have the opportunity while at Loughborough to view the University’s world class training facilities which will be a key part of the Japanese and GB teams’ Olympic preparation and used in the development of cutting edge products to optimise athletic performance.

The event will further strengthen the University’s existing ties with Japanese sports technology industry with Professor Mike Caine, Director of the Sports Technology Institute, recently returning from a visit to Japan where he delivered an address to the Japanese Sports Engineering research community.
