D-Day at Dorney for Loughborough rowing quartet

Four Loughborough University rowers will be aiming to take a step closer to national colours this weekend when they take to the water in the third round of selection trials for the GB Rowing team.

George Caines, Monica Relph, Alex Tarrant and Jonathan Walton head to Dorney Lake on Saturday for the third GB Winter Assessment Trials and will be striving to ensure they are in the mix for the last round of trials in April, ahead of July’s World Under 23 Championships in Brest, Belarus.

22-year-old Relph, who was part of the Under 23 World Championship winning women’s eight last year, said: “Loughborough has never had this many rowers get this far before so it’s encouraging for us because this is a massive year.”

Relph, Caines and Walton are all on 2012 scholarships at Loughborough while Tarrant is on a sports scholarship.

With rowing only acquiring Performance Sport status at the University in 2008, coach Mitch Rosenlund has been impressed with how the Loughborough athletes have progressed: “This is a stepping stone in a process which we hope will end with selection for the squad and then for Belarus,” he said.

“All four rowers have had a good, solid winter’s training. The competition gets tough from here but we’re confident.”

The weekend at the venue set to host the Olympic rowing regatta in 2012 begins with time trials followed by semi-finals on Saturday before Sunday’s finals.
