A Loughborough University graduate has been presented with a prestigious engineering award at the 2010 Science Engineering and Technology Awards (SET) ceremony in London.

Karl Jones, who graduated from Loughborough’s Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering (AAE) with a first class honours degree this summer, was presented with the Bentley Motors Award for the Best Mechanical Engineering Student. It is the sixth time a Loughborough University student from the AAE Department has won a SET award in the last 10 years.

“Karl’s final year project is a truly outstanding piece of work,” explains Professor Joseph Loughlan from the University’s AAE Department. “Karl’s work makes a considerable contribution to knowledge in the field of thin-walled structures and I am delighted that his findings are to be presented an international conference on the same subject, as well as being put forward for consideration for publication in an international research journal on structural mechanics.

“The success of Loughborough University at these awards, which attracts keen competition from students at UK and European universities, reflects the high quality projects of the Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering’s students and their ability to tackle and solve complex engineering problems, backed up by a significant in-depth knowledge and understanding of key technological issues pertaining to their research.”

The SET awards are held annually and provide a showcase for educational excellence by recognising outstanding achievements by students and universities.
