Loughborough University is celebrating after receiving a prestigious Lord Stafford Award at a ceremony in Leicester in the East Midlands category of Innovation for Sustainability.

The University has been working in partnership with the Hardstaff Group to bring a dual fuel injection system into the HGV marketplace, whereby 70 per cent of diesel fuel used by a conventional HGV engine is substituted with natural gas resulting in the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by up to 20 per cent.

Dr Andrew Clarke, from the Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at Loughborough University, said: “It has been a fantastic experience to be able to link up with the Hardstaff Group on this project. Here at Loughborough Professor Graham Hargrave built a bespoke gas flow test rig, which is based on a HGV cylinder head and this then led to Loughborough University working with Hardstaff to test their theories and trial the system on a vehicle.

“Loughborough’s excellence in dual-fuel research has now led to the Technology Strategy Board commissioning the University to work on a two-litre engine design, so we look forward to continuing our research in this area.”

The Lord Stafford Awards are the only ones in the UK dedicated to recognising innovative collaborations between businesses and Universities.
