Loughborough University senior lecturer shortlisted for most innovative teacher award 2010

A senior lecturer at Loughborough University has been shortlisted from more than 500 entries for the Most Innovative Teacher of the Year Award by the Times Higher Education Awards 2010.

Dr Carol Robinson, Director of the Mathematics Education Centre at Loughborough University, was concerned about the well documented decline in mathematical skills possessed by entrants to engineering and science degree programmes across the country. To turn this around, Dr Robinson tapped into the passion students at Loughborough have for sport and has made sport integral to the teachings of mathematics. Her first year engineering mathematics modules include topics such as the Duckworth-Lewis model for one-day cricket, modelling of the pulse rate of long distance runners, javelin throwing, lane staggers on the athletics track and downhill skiing.

In addition, Dr Robinson is also pioneering the use of Electronic Voting Systems to increase student participation and engagement during lectures and she set up a university-wide staff interest group.

Speaking about the nomination, Dr Robinson said: “It is a real honour to be considered for this award as so many lecturers are undertaking excellent work with their students and looking at new and more effective ways to teach.”

Professor Morag Bell, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Teaching) at Loughborough University commented: “Dr Robinson continually strives to ensure her students get the best they can out of their studies and to this end she reflects the University’s commitment to excellence and the high standards that are set in all of our academic disciplines.

“The impact of Dr Robinson’s innovative teaching methods has spread beyond Loughborough with many people being inspired by her ideas and techniques. She is a consummate professional and continually looks at ways she can enhance her skills and knowledge for the benefit of her students. This is what makes her outstanding in her field.”

Dr Robinson will attend Times Higher Education Awards ceremony in London on Thursday 25 November where the winner will be announced.
