Past and present Loughborough students have helped to secure the first ever World Cup medal for the England women’s hockey team.

Current Loughborough students Laura Unsworth and Nicola White, along with graduates Katie Long, Hannah Macleod and Kerry Williams, all played their part as England recorded their best-ever World Cup result.

England beat Germany 2-0 to claim bronze at the BDO FIH World Cup in Rosario, Argentina. Alex Danson gave England the lead just before the half hour before she set up Helen Richardson to make it 2-0 moments later.

It is the second bronze medal England have won this year, after finishing third at the Women’s Champions Trophy in Nottingham in July.

Jerome Goudie, Women’s Hockey Coach at Loughborough University, said:

“This is a fantastic achievement for the England squad, who have moved into a centralised programme at Bisham Abbey, and are progressing well towards London 2012.

“It is a delight for Loughborough University to have so many involved in the set-up and contributing towards England’s success at an international level.”

The England squad are now looking forward to competing at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, which are being held in Delhi and start on 3rd October.
