A silk scarf designed by a Loughborough University printed textiles graduate has gone on sale at one of the UK’s most prestigious and historic department stores – Liberty of London.

The design by Jayne Boyle was entered into the TEXPRINT ComOn 2009 scarf design competition during her final year of study at Loughborough.

The competition is a collaboration between TEXPRINT, a non-profit organisation that launches new UK-trained textile design talent, and ComOn, an initiative launched by Confindustria Como to bring together young designers and the Como silk industry.  With the theme of the ‘Grand Tour’, 24 British art schools were twinned with evocative Italian cities and set the challenge of creating a scarf print to celebrate that area.

From a group of 15 shortlisted entries, three winning designs were selected by a panel of judges from the fashion industry including Elena Alfani, director of accessories at Italian fashion house Salvatore Ferragamo, and Ed Burstell, director of buying at Liberty.

Jayne’s design, based on Bergamo, won the silver award.

Speaking about Jayne’s achievement Tina Frank, printed textiles programme leader at Loughborough University, said: “The whole team is delighted with Jayne's accomplishment and wish her every success in her future career.”

The limited-edition scarf designs were unveiled on January 12 in New York at the Direction by Indigo event, an international exhibition of creative textile design, and went on sale at Liberty on
January 30.

Following her success in the competition Jayne has also been offered a six-month placement at Salvatore Ferragamo fashion house in Florence.
