Loughborough University leads energy research in Europe

Loughborough University is leading a major project examining how Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can help boost energy efficiency across Europe.

The €1.8 million REViSITE (Roadmap Enabling Vision and Strategy for ICT-enabled Energy Efficiency) project is being funded by the European Commission and will draw on the expertise of several key research and industry organisations.

The project will study the interfaces between buildings, power grids, lighting and manufacturing; and assess the impact of ICT on energy efficiency for these sectors.  It will also shape the European strategic research agenda of ICT for energy efficiency (ICT4EE).

REViSITE is being led by Loughborough University’s Professor of Construction Informatics Tarek Hassan, from the Department of Civil and Building Engineering.  The other project partners include Intel (Ireland), VTT (Finland), Fraunhofer (Germany), KEMA (Netherlands), CSTB (France) and INNOVA S.p.A (Italy).

Speaking about the project Professor Hassan said: “I am delighted that our research team at Loughborough is driving such an important initiative.  REViSITE is expected to provide a significant contribution towards achieving the European 20-20-20 strategy.  This sets out a target for EU member states to slash their collective greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20%, boost their share of renewable energy to 20% of their total energy consumption and reduce their primary energy use by 20% compared with projected levels by 2020.  ICT is expected to have a significant impact on achieving these targets.”
