Donations Fund contributions reward University staff volunteers

Donations Fund 2010

Work undertaken in the community on a voluntary basis by staff has been rewarded in the final round of grants from the Loughborough University Community Donations Fund for the year 2009/10.

In total £5,000 was awarded to 15 groups from the Inside Out Fund, one of four categories that make up the overall Community Donations Fund.

Staff working in a range of academic and administration departments submitted bids and the range of activities demonstrates the diversity of groups supported by volunteers working at the University. The groups and the projects receiving support are:

The Crowded House, Loughborough Support for five-a-side football tournament £200

The members of staff receiving awards were presented with their cheques by the University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Shirley Pearce at a small ceremony held on campus earlier this month.

At the ceremony Professor Pearce paid tribute to the dedication of members of staff working in community groups.  She said:  “The University is especially pleased to have been able to establish this particular fund, The Inside Out Fund, where we can support staff involved in community activities by directing our financial contributions to the groups they are involved with. There is a wonderful diversity in the groups supported and this reflects the many interests of people who work at the University.  Our staff are vital to the success of University and it is great to be able to support people in their endeavours away from campus, recognising the many hours of volunteering that take place out of normal working hours. “

The University is currently finalising the award of the Strategic Fund of £10,000 which is being allocated to projects in the community based on an assessment of local need.  The recipients will receive their funding later in the summer.

The Donations Fund will be in operation again for the academic year 2010/11 and details of the relevant deadlines for submission will be available shortly.  Community groups interested in applying should visit www.lboro.ac.uk/community for further information.
